The Land of Wine and Myths – The land of Idones

Estates Costa Lazaridi

The history of wine can be traced back to 4300 BC at Dikili Tash, an ancient archaeological site, close to our premises. The site’s name, which translates to “upright stone,” marks a significant chapter in viticulture’s origins. Here, archaeologists uncovered pressed grape seeds: the earliest known traces of winemaking in all of Europe.

This land was once home to the Idones and Satrae, ancient Greek-Thracian tribes devoted to the worship of Dionysus, the god of wine and feasts. Centuries later, not far from the foothills of Mount Menoikio- in the middle of our Kali Vrysi vineyards – archaeologists uncovered yet another relic of the past: the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Dionysus, dating from the 4th century BC.

Long before wine became a global symbol of culture and celebration, here in Northern Greece it was a ritual, a gift, a devotion – and Dionysian festivals continue to honor this timeless tradition even today.

Vineyards

Our vineyards lie at the crossroads of myth and innovative viticulture.

The region’s balanced continental climate, with Mount Falakro, Menoikio, and Orvilos, as well as the fertile valleys on the slopes of Drama, create a unique microclimate. Here, grapes develop with minimal intervention, acquiring distinct aromas and expressing the uniqueness of the place. Our private vineyards are located next to Natura 2000 areas, where natural biodiversity flourishes. Thus, our vineyards grow in harmony with a living ecosystem.

Since 1979, at Estates Costa Lazaridi, we proudly carry this heritage forward.

The winery

Beyond the vineyards, in Adriani, lies the heart of the Estate – our modern winery. In the underground aging cellars, red wines, as well as some white wines, mature in oak barrels, wooden tanks, amphorae, or concrete eggs, ensuring optimal conditions for their evolution. Selected bottles are transferred to private cellars, where they continue their aging journey.

Distillery

Our contemporary distillery combines tradition and innovation to craft premium distillates with the unique Estates Costa Lazaridi signature. Our distillates are produced using carefully selected grapes, pomace, and wines from our own vineyards. Modern copper alembics preserve the delicate aromas and character of the fruit, while our master distillers focus on the precious “heart” of the distillation, ensuring only the finest part is kept.

Acetaia

Our one-of-a-kind acetaia is home to the Botanico range of aged balsamic vinegars.
Here, wine vinegar is blended with grape must and left to mature slowly in wooden barrels, some for up to 10 years. In the traditional batterie of small barrels, following the Modena standards, the vinegars undergo their transformation, proof that the best flavor can only come with patience and time.
